How Many Amps Does 100W Solar Panel Produce? (Facts Only)

Just a few photo-voltaic cells put together in a frame is a solar panel. In other words, many solar cells installed collectively is called a solar panel.

Solar panels are now being used almost everywhere in the world. People like to use that electricity that the panels trap for the sun. It’s good for the environment, so why not?

You, yourself, may have a solar panel at home. It’s probably a 100-watt solar panel which is the common size for households, if yours is bigger or smaller, that’s fine too.

Now, ever wondered how many amps your 100w solar panel produces? The straightforward answer is 6 amps in a sun hour. Which is equivalent to 30-amp hours in a day.

However, there’s more to solar panels than just how much electricity is produced by them, this post covered all the topics.

Let’s jump right into it.

What Are The Factors Affecting The Effective Amp Output From A 100w Solar Panel?

While there are many factors that may or may not affect the amp output from a 100w solar panel. Let’s discuss the major ones.

In general, a solar panel has 36 solar cells. Now for a 100w solar panel, it cannot, unfortunately, charge your Tesla. Because the panel isn’t that strong enough.

However, what a 100w panel can power are cell phones, bulbs, lamps, etc. Basically all the small kinds of stuff.

The main factors that affect the effective amp output are:

Quality of the solar panel
Solar Light
Mounting Position

Quality

For starters let’s go over the quality. This is very important, especially while purchasing a solar panel because here, brand matters too.

Let’s say, you bought an off-brand solar panel. An average lifespan of a solar panel is 25-30 years. Which is pretty long.

This does not mean, the solar panels can’t go any longer or have a shorter life period than the given time. If you are buying a cheap panel, chances are it probably won’t have that long lifespan.

This does not mean you shouldn’t go for inexpensive panels either. But I highly recommend you do some research before you buy a budget panel.

Studies say an average solar panel lasts for 20 years, but you may wonder, what happens after 20 years?

The panel doesn’t go out of use, there are still some cells in the panel that can produce electricity. But this is the rough estimate on if you use the solar panel often without care. The good news is that, with proper maintenance, a solar panel can live for double the time, yes 40 years.

In a 100w panel, the same thing happens, the 30amps it can produce in a day also depend on the quality of the panel. And how much you take care of the board.

Solar Light

This is a quite controversial topic, but the shortest explanation is this. A panel’s ability to produce electricity increases if the intensity of light rays is increased.

According to this research, through multiple experiments, it’s shown that as the light and its intensity increases the photovoltaic cells in the solar panel also improves.

So, we can only come to this one conclusion, that is, light definitely has an approach when it comes to better production of electricity.

So, if you happen to have a 100w solar panel, you probably will have better electricity to work with on a sunny day.

This also means that, if the light strength is higher, the panels can produce electricity faster. Therefore, there’s no need to worry about charging your phone with that 100w panel on a hot day.

Position of the solar panel

Last but not the least, the positioning of the panels. Well, there are some general rules that everyone needs to follow while mounting the panels.

The panels have to be mounted on the opposite side, depending on the hemisphere.

Let me break it down. Suppose you live in the northern hemisphere, this means your solar panel should be faced to the south, the opposite of the north. If you are in the southern hemisphere, the panel should be positioned towards the north.

This is to get the most out of the solar panels, as opposite directions provide the most light.

Another thing that you should keep in mind is the tilt or angle of the solar panel. Because the tilt of the solar panels can affect the electricity output oftentimes.

Just like directions, another rule is to keep the solar panels tilted in a way so that the angle produced is equal to the terrestrial range.

If your solar pattern is 60 degrees in latitude, the panel should be tilted in a 60 degree way as well.

For 100w panels, the same rules apply, for best results put it in an equivalent tilt, and position the panels accordingly to where ever you are located.

How Much Power Does A 100w Solar Panel Produce?

An average solar panel needed in a home goes in a range of 250-400watts. But since we are talking 100watts here, let’s stick to it.

Now as mentioned earlier, 100w solar panels 30amp-hours in a day. What if you want the 100w to fully cover your house? In that case, go for 3 100 watt solar panels.

Solar panels can be purchased, just the panels or an entire kit with mounts, and everything. There are many brands offering great quality solar panels, for example, Coleman, Richsolar, Goal Zero, and many more.

There are a lot of advantages of a 100w solar panel. An average solar board is about 65 by 39 inches, whereas a 100w panel is 47 by 22 inches.

As by the numbers, you can already tell 100w panels are not the biggest boards available in the market. This makes it easy to carry around. You can even take it with you on your next trip!

Although, in general, the panel can produce 30-amp hours. If your solar panel has access to sunlight for 8 hours or more, it can produce 1 kilowatt-hours in a day.

One 100 watt inset alone can power and charge up small devices, like phones, routers, laptops, etc. So, if you are carrying a 100w board with you on a camping trip, you don’t have to worry about firing up your daily gadgets.

The power of energy that a 100w panel can produce really is up to the sunlight they can receive. So in easy words, the more sun ray means the more power you get.

Nevertheless, one downside of the 100w panels is that they cannot store energy. This means if you are not using the energy produced by the panel, it’s pretty much wastage.

The Bottom Line

Solar panels are extremely useful regardless, where you live. With global warming and the alarming increase in temperature day by day, it’s very convenient to have a solar board at home. You are helping in saving the planet and saving some bucks too.

A 100w solar board is easier to carry than average panels, because of its size. The panel can help you use the power on your electric gadgets like tablets, laptops, phones, wifi routers, etc.

If you are planning on using a panel to cover your house entirely, a 100w board won’t be able to do it. To power up your house, use a bigger panel with higher watts than a 100.

There are some cases that you need to consider which may affect your power flow in the 100w panel, which are the quality of the panel, the entrance of light, and the mounting position of the panel.

Do some research on what may affect the energy flow in your panel, know exactly what you want to charge up with your solar panel, and you are good to go!
